The loud tick is the relay. You think the starter works? Why, because you hooked up same wires and it spun? That does not mean it works. The solenoid on top of the starter is what engages the gears and spins the starter. And since most are integrated, you have to buy an entire starter. Also, ALL the wires going to the starter have to be attached properly. If the ignition cannot power up the solenoid and make the starter turn, you get nothing.
