Whats wrong with my 2002 Buick Le Sabre Custom engine?

I have recently bought a 2002 Buick Le Sabre Custom and when i try to start it it just makes this ticking noise, so i cranked the engine and then i tried to start it. It started then i turned it off, but when i tried again it didn't work, it just made the same old ticking noise. So after that i tried to crank it again, but it wont turn, no matter how hard i try.

Get the battery checked free at an auto parts store to see if it is the battery or is the alternator not recharging the battery.
