Due to the wide range of models and options, the instrument panel and pad removal procedure cannot cover every possible location for screw or clip locations. The car's instrument panel enables removal of control switches, instruments, gauges, and lights from the driver's side of the instrument panel. Trim panels that must be removed are held in place by bolts, screws and clips. These locations vary from model to model. After the removal of all the fasteners that you are aware of, if the cluster is still firmly attached, you probably missed a hidden fastener. If this happens, gently and carefully pry the area, looking for the location that doesn't flex. The location that does flex is where you'll find the fastener(s) you missed. Take great care with the plastic trim panels. Plastic trim panels are usually very hard plastic and extremely easy to crack. The following steps can be used to guide you through the removal and installation of the instrument cluster, but you will need to alter steps to your specific needs.

WARNING

Servicing the instrument area requires disconnecting the negative battery cable. The electronics involved with an analog or digital dashboard are both sensitive and expensive. Use great care with these components. If equipped with an air bag, you MUST follow all DISARMING procedures, as described in.

1.Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped with SIR, disable the SIR system as outlined in of this repair guide.

CAUTION

Some models covered by this information may be equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SIR components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SIR, as described in.

2.Remove the steering column filler panel.

3.Remove the instrument panel top cover-to-instrument panel screws.

4.If equipped with a twilight sentinel, pop up the photocell retainer and turn the photocell counterclockwise in the retainer and pull it down-and-out.

5.Slide the instrument panel top cover out far enough to disconnect the aspirator hose and the electrical connector, if equipped.

6.Remove the instrument panel top cover/pad from the instrument panel. If equipped with quartz electronic speedometer clusters, remove the steering column trim cover, so the shift indicator can be removed.

It may be helpful to tilt the wheel all the way down and pull the gear select lever to low, when removing the cluster.

9.Disconnect the non-volatile memory chip, if equipped.

10.Remove the speedometer retaining screws and disconnect the speedometer cable or the electrical connection, if equipped.

11.Remove the speedometer assembly.

12.Remove the radio and heater and A/C control assembly, as outlined in of this repair guide.

13.Remove the glove compartment door and/or glove compartment, as necessary.

14.Tag and unplug all necessary electrical connectors.

15.Unfasten the screws attaching the ALDL connector to the instrument panel (located near the dimmer module).

16.Detach the cigar lighter wires, then remove the ashtray. If necessary, remove the ashtray slide bracket.

17.If necessary, remove the fuse block from the instrument panel by pushing up on the lower tab to release, then push on the panel behind the instrument panel.

The retaining screws may be different sizes, so be sure to note their locations during removal.

18.Unfasten the instrument panel support screws and mounting screws, noting their locations for installation.

19.Tag and detach the instrument panel electrical connectors. It may be necessary to use a small flat-bladed tool to push the locking tang(s) from the holes in the instrument panel, then slide the connector downward.

20.Unfasten any necessary steering column support or instrument panel bracket bolts.

21.Disconnect the side defogger hoses from the instrument panel outlet connections.

22.Remove any electrical harness retaining clips from the metal instrument panel bracket.
